Nigeria’s land borders to be reopened soon- Finance Minister, Ahmed Zainab hints

The Minister of Finance and Budget, Ahmed Zainab, has hinted that Nigeria’s land borders that have been closed since August 2019 may be reopened soon.

 

Zainab gave the hint during an interview with State House correspondents on Wednesday November 25. She said the presidential committee set up on the matter has completed its job and has recommended the reopening of the borders. According to the finance minister, the committee would soon submit its report to President Buhari.

In August 2019, the Federal government ordered the closure of the borders to curtail illegal importation of drugs, small arms, and agricultural products into the country from neighboring West African nations.

Mother and son arrested with 49 parcels of Indian hemp

A 21-year-old man identified as Kabiru Mahmud has been arrested by the Kano police command alongside his mother and uncle for being in possession of 49 parcels of Indian hemp.

 

Mahmud was arrested at Danbire village while transporting the substance from his family home at Gadonkaya quarters to a hiding place on the outskirts of Kano metropolis, after the police received an intelligence report of a young man carrying sacks believed to be Indian hemp.

It was gathered that the suspect’s mother had directed him to move the substance from her matrimonial home at Gadonkaya quarters to Danbire. During a phone conversation, Mahmud’s mother told him that the police has arrested his father with Indian hemp and that he should get rid of the Indian hemp kept in the home in anticipation of the arrival of the police.

He admitted taking the Indian hemp and also told police that his father had been in the Indian hemp business for about 20 years.

Mahmud said;

 

“I called my friend at Danbire that I will bring the substance to his residence. My uncle called a tricycle rider, we loaded the substance and moved it to Danbire. Upon our arrival, the operatives of Anti Daba arrested all of us.”

Kano police spokesperson, Abdullahi Kiyawa said the Commissioner of Police has directed that the case be transferred to the state CID for further investigation. He also ordered an investigation into the source of the substance and how it was smuggled to Kano.

Football world in mourning after the death of Argentina legend, Diego Maradona

The football world has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Diego Maradona.

 

The Argentina legend, who was the manager of Argentinian club side Gimnasia passed away aged 60 on Wednesday, November 25th, after suffering a cardiac arrest at his home country.

 

The news comes just two weeks after he left the hospital where he underwent surgery on a blot clot in his brain.

 

The Argentine FA confirmed the news in a statement on Twitter which read: “The Argentine Football Association, through its President Claudio Tapia, expresses its deepest sorrow for the death of our legend, Diego Armando Maradona.

“You will always be in our hearts.”

 

Maradona, regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, was the inspiration for Argentina’s World Cup success in Mexico in 1986, winning the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.

 

He also led the country to the final of the 1990 tournament in Italy although his international playing career ended in shame when he failed a drug test at the 1994 World Cup in the United States.

He played club football for Boca Juniors, Napoli, and Barcelona among others, and was adored by millions of fans for his football talent.

 

During his time with Italian side Napoli, he won the Serie A title in 1987 and 1990, along with an Italian Cup in 1987 and a Uefa Cup in 1991.

In 1999 and 2000 he was taken to hospital suffering heart problems, the second time requiring a respirator to breathe.

 

In 2004, he was again treated in hospital for severe heart and respiratory problems linked to his drug abuse.

He has undergone two gastric bypass operations to control his weight and received treatment for alcohol abuse.

 

In January, he had surgery to stem bleeding in his stomach, and in July he underwent a knee operation.

 

Three weeks ago he was admitted to hospital for surgery on a blood clot in his brain, before being discharged to recover at home.

 

Football clubs and countries around the world including notable figures have paid tributes to the legend.
