Beirut rocked by second ‘explosion’ leaving two dead and multiple injured (photos)

  1. A reported gas tank explosion has rocked the city of Beirut, Lebanon, with two confirmed dead and several injured.

     

    Military and emergency services arrived at the Tawik Jdide area of Beirut, Lebanon, following reports of an explosion on Friday evening, October 9.

     

    The Secretary-General of the Lebanese Red Cross, George Kittana, confirmed two people had died in the explosion, with a number wounded.

    In a call with the National News Agency, Mr Kittana said: “Two bodies and a number of wounded were transferred to Al-Maqasid Hospital as a result of the explosion of the diesel tank that caught fire this evening.”

     

    He said the injured have been transferred to Al-Maqasid Hospital and authorities are still aiding recovery efforts alongside the Lebanese Red Cross.

     

    Eye-witnesses have said volunteers are at present searching through rubble and debris in case anyone is trapped in their house or place of work, Daily Beirut reports.

    A Jaras Scoop FM reporter said the Civil Defence has evacuated a large number of residents from neighbouring buildings after the structure showed cracks.

     

    He said: “Wounded by the Beirut explosion, the civil defence evacuates the residents from the neighbouring buildings, after cracking.”

     

    Chilling footage posted to Twitter shows firefighters tackling a large blaze as people scream and shout behind them.

    Images also show brave locals aiding firefighters to put out flames on the street as people look on at a blaze.

     

    Pictures of smoke rising over the city have also emerged alongside reports of “shockwaves” and rubble and glass strewn on the street.

     

    Other snaps show debris flung in different directions, with a large group of people fleeing from the scene to safety.

    Residents in the Tarik Jdide area have reported hearing loud screams followed by an explosion and buildings shaking.

38-year-old university lecturer shot dead by unknown gunmen in Abuja

Unknown gunmen killed a 38-year-old old lecturer of the Geophysiscs Department, Federal University of Birnin, Kebbi State.

It was gathered that Abdullahi Abubakar Dakingari, was killed in Abuja where he had gone to see his ailing father, who is on admission in the hospital..

An uncle to the deceased, Abubakar Mu’azu Dakingari, who confirmed the incident to Daily Trust on Friday, October 16, said the deceased was killed at Life Camp Quarters in the FCT around 10:30 pm on Wednesday, October 14 after he got trapped during a shooting spree.

The late Dakingari, had since been buried according to Islamic rites in his hometown. He left behind a wife and one child.

Adejo Akowe, the former chairman of the Dekina Local Government Area in Kogi state has reportedly died.

Akowe died, four days after being shot by unknown gunmen in Ayingba area of the state. The Nation reported that he died on Saturday morning at the National Hospital Abuja where he was being treated.

The family of Isiaq Jimoh, who was shot dead during #EndSARS protest in Oyo state, lamented his demise and called for justice to be served.

 

Jimoh’s father, mother, grandfather, and baby mama all spoke about the events leading up to his death.

 

His father said he wasn’t protesting and was simply on his way to his mother’s house when officers started firing at end SARS protesters and he was hit.

His mother said she called him immediately she heard there was a riot and asked him to go home immediately.

Jimoh’s child’s mother explained that he only recently returned to beg her for forgiveness for abandoning her and their baby after she got pregnant and promised to be there for them henceforth. She said he also apologized to her mother but he didn’t live to fulfill his promises.

His grandfather stated that SARS officers are “thieves” and you can’t have a “thief arresting thieves.” He said SARS is the reason for his grandson’s death and should be disbanded. He added that he has no problem with the police because they are needed and they do not cause as much problem as SARS.

 

Isiaq Jimoh’s father stated that he knows the name of the officer who allegedly killed his son and he expects justice to be served. He explained that 3 bullets were removed from his son’s body during surgery and four strangers donated blood in addition to the ones donated by family members for his son’s surgery. Unfortunately, his son didn’t survive the surgery because he was bleeding heavily from his bullet wounds.
